Jerusalem, Israel - Mar. 27, 2024  - Avi Zimmerman worked for over a decade in promoting and assisting in the growth of the city of Ariel in the Shomron. Established in 1978, its population has grown to become the fourth-largest Israeli community in Judea/Samaria. Ariel is home to veteran and young Israelis, English-speaking Olim, Olim from the former Soviet Union, and an additional 10,000 students who study at Ariel University. On my first visit to Ariel years ago, on a media tour, I met him, and over the years, we have met again on various occasions.

Since the end of 2023, the founder & CEO at Sector4 Strategy LTD, Zimmerman has added author to his list of credentials. His book "Kosher Giving: 4 Steps to Creating Your Meaningful, Mindful, and Measurable Philanthropy Plan" is a useful source for making a meaningful impact during these challenging times.  It is available in hardcover, 192 pages, as well as Kindle edition online format. He aims to give the reader innovative strategies to enhance the impact of their contributions. taking into account purpose, needs, and its impact on society. It is not only the amount of the tzedakah that counts but also how it is used.

He describes his formula as follows:

The 3 M's of Kosher Giving: Learn to give in a meaningful, mindful, and measurable way.

The 3 Pillars: the foundations of purpose, impact agents, and needs, and understanding how they guide effective philanthropy.

Applying Heritage-Inspired Perspectives: based on the teachings of Maimonides on the "how" of giving.

  • In times of crisis, the power of giving becomes even more profound. The October 7 War has brought unforeseen challenges and hardships to the people of Israel. During trying times people have come together, not just as a community but as a global family, to offer assistance where needed most. KosherGiving.com was born out of a desire to help funders navigate the complex landscape of charitable initiatives in Israel. The team at Sector4 Strategy, an Israel-based impact firm, recognized the need for a centralized platform that not only highlights deserving projects but also aids in prioritizing donations for maximum impact.

When asked by BJL for a pre-Pesach thought to share with readers, Zimmerman responded, "As Pesach approaches, we should be challenging ourselves: can we give as well as slaves give? As we welcome "kol dichfin" (everyone who is hungry) and "kol dizrich" (everyone who is needy) to join us at the Seder, we do so from the perspective of slaves: "Today we are slaves". When our means are limited we value what we have, and we value what we give. But when we have more, we tend to undervalue both.

Some readers have told me that they wish that they had a million dollars to give to tzedakah so that they can apply the "Kosher Giving" methodology to a major gift, I suggest that they treat every donation as though it was a million dollars. Your opportunity to give is also a responsibility. Meaningful, mindful, and measurable giving invites us to make the most of our resources and appreciate that our contributions are the best investments we can make."
