Detroit, MI – Feb. 25, 2026 – A Monday night flight from Israel bound for JFK Airport was diverted to Detroit due to severe weather in New York, leaving approximately 150 Jewish passengers stranded overnight without access to kosher food.

Upon learning of the diversion, Daniel Greenbaum, owner of Metropolitan Dry Cleaners, coordinated an emergency effort to provide food and assistance to the passengers.

“As soon as I heard about the flight, I knew something had to be done,” Greenbaum said. “Knowing that so many Jews would arrive without access to kosher food was a serious concern. As a community, we step up for one another.”

Greenbaum contacted Brian and Rivka Jacobs, owners of Jerusalem Pizza—the only kosher pizza establishment in Detroit—to help prepare food on short notice. Working throughout the day, the group produced 65 large pizzas, eight gluten-free pizzas, vegan and cheeseless options, 150 individual orders of fries, 50 tuna and egg sandwiches, and multiple cases of water and Snapple.

Simultaneously, Hatzalah of Detroit became involved. Together with Hatzalah, Greenbaum worked to confirm the number of passengers and dietary needs, as well as relay information from the diverted flight’s passengers. From there, a WhatsApp group was created to bring together passengers, volunteers, and vendors.

Hatzalah of Detroit stepped in to coordinate with Delta and airport officials to secure a location outside customs for food distribution, and tables were set up to serve the arriving passengers. Various medical supplies and toys for the stranded children were provided generously by Hatzalah as well. Additionally, they arranged for police assistance in curbside security to ensure all volunteers could easily run inside and help the stranded passengers.

As Hatzalah and the local community worked to prepare housing options for passengers, Delta reached out to offer hotel vouchers. Hatzalah quickly shifted focus and began driving passengers to various hotels. Passengers were sent to their hotels with plenty of food for the night and even for the next morning, thanks to Rivka Jacobs, Gaby Jacobs, and the entire Jerusalem Pizza team.

Staff from Metropolitan Dry Cleaners and Jerusalem Pizza worked tirelessly in food preperation and packing, loading up the cars for delivery, food transportation, and on-site distribution at the airport. Local community members were eager to jump in and help contribute funds, including a significant anonymous donor who generously help make it possible.

The spontaneous response highlighted the strength of Detroit’s Jewish community and its rapid mobilization to support fellow Jews during an unexpected disruption.
