BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.
The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

New York, NY - Nov. 19, 2025 - On Friday, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order that includes, among other items, an exemption to the reciprocal tariffs on "bread...used for religious purposes" (e.g., Matzah) and on the Arba Minim – the plant species used by Jews during the holiday of Sukkos.
As the overwhelming majority of these products come from Israel and other foreign countries, tariffs would have threatened access and increased costs of religious observance. This accommodation builds upon the precedent of other exemptions to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule for certain religious items and is consistent with the Trump administration’s focus on protecting religious freedom.
“Thank you to the Trump administration for once again accommod...

During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1 and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion, and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments. They put their hands on their property and their daughters. They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean. The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them. Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them and saved the Jews from their hands. They appointed a king from the Priests, and the kingdom of Israel was restored for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple). When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them, it was the 25th of Kislev2 when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple, except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest, and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only. But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days, until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil. For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation that these eight days that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise. One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses, every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle. These days are called ''Hanukah'' that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month) because on the 25th they rested from their enemies. and also because of those days they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled. Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah. Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days. One should tell one's children the story of the miracles that were done for our fore-fathers in those days, (see Josephus) However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment unless one says at the meal songs of praise. One should increase charity in these Hanukah days, for this can help mend any defects in our souls. This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1) 1) 352 BCE until 70 CE 2) 139 BCE 3) The Menorah was made of gold and had seven branches.
Baltimore, MD - Nov. 19, 2025 - Twenty months later, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is revealing its long-awaited findings on the Key Bridge disaster. During an hours long public meeting Tuesday, federal investigators claimed something shockingly small is what plunged the massive Dali into darkness — a single loose wire buried among thousands on board.
The NTSB also warned dozens of other bridges nationwide — including Maryland’s Bay Bridge — face similar risks.
“The fact is none of us should be here today. This tragedy should have never occurred,” NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said.
Calling it a preventable tragedy, the NTSB first broke down what went wrong, then discussed what needs to change to keep it from...
Michelle Weiss was elected mayor of University Heights, Ohio, becoming the first orthodox Jewish woman to serve as a mayor in the US.
Weiss, a longtime Republican, won the race in the Democratic suburb of Cleveland with a campaign focused on bipartisanship and bridge-building.
She served on the city council for 15 years and as deputy mayor for the past six. Her victory marks a milestone in Orthodox Jewish political representation in the US - no other orthodox Jewish woman is known to have held a similar position.
“I love University Heights - my husband and I raised our children here and now watch our grandchildren grow,” Weiss said at the launch of her campaign. “I feel a debt of gratitude to the city and a commitment to make a difference.”
Weiss built her campa...

Washingtion, D.C. - Nov. 18, 2025 - On Tuesday morning, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) met and heard presentations from several staff members on the investigation into the Dali crash into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in March 2024.
"The fact is, none of us should be here today," says Chair Jennifer Homendy. "This tragedy should have never occurred. Lives should have never been lost. As with all accidents that we investigate this was preventable."
The Board heard presentations about several aspects of the investigation into the crash.
"This was a complex, multi-modal investigation," Homendy says.
The Dali was equipped with an emergency generator, which was designed to kick in in the event of a loss of power, according to the staff presentations about the container ship....

Washington, D.C. - Nov. 18, 2025 - The Trump administration announced Tuesday that the Department of Education signed a series of interagency agreements to shift power from a handful of its offices and programs to other federal agencies as it works to dismantle the federal department for good.
"The Trump Administration is taking bold action to break up the federal education bureaucracy and return education to the states," Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a Tuesday press release. "Cutting through layers of red tape in Washington is one essential piece of our final mission. As we partner with these agencies to improve federal programs, we will continue to gather best practices in each state through our 50-state tour, empower local leaders in K-12 education, resto...
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman committed his country to increasing his planned investment into the U.S. economy to nearly $1 trillion over the next year on Tuesday.
MBS made the announcement while meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, saying the investments will take place across the U.S. economy. Trump initially stated that the investment would amount to "at least" $600 billion, but the Saudi leader confirmed the higher amount during his remarks.
"You've agreed to invest $600 billion into the United States and because he's my friend, he might make it a trillion, but I'm going to have to work on him. But it's 600. We can count on 600 billion. But, that number could go up a little bit higher," Trump said Tuesday.
"That means inves...
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is calling on neighboring nations to join in the Jewish state's fight to expel Hamas out of the region.
"Israel extends its hand in peace and prosperity to all of our neighbors and calls on them to normalize relations with Israel and join us in expelling Hamas and its supporters from the region," Netanyahu's office wrote on X.
The statement follows the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) endorsement of President Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza. The council adopted the plan, which would end the war and deploy an international stabilization force, on Monday.
In an address to the council, Waltz described Gaza as "a hell on earth" after two years of conflict, saying the resolution offered the world a...
Jerusalem, Israel - Nov. 18, 2025 - In July 2023, inspired by a video of Rachel Goldberg-Polin speaking at Kever Rachel, Shayna Levine-Hefetz sat down at the piano. As she played, music flowed through her, imagining Rachel in conversation with her Biblical namesake. In that moment, the idea of Heroines was born. With Toby Klein Greenwald's support, Shayna began collecting ideas for songs that connect our modern-day heroines to their Biblical counterparts, some through humor, others through tears. As the project evolved, two more Rachels joined Rachel’s Song, and many more heroines emerged, some celebrated in their communities, others becoming national icons. For Toby and Shayna, co-authoring the show became a sacred mission: getting to know these wome...
Baltimore, MD - Nov. 18, 2025 - An estimated 1.7 million gallons of untreated sewage flowed into Baltimore's Jones Falls, according to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).
MDE received a report Thursday morning of an overflow that began around noon Wednesday.
Officials say the location of the overflow was the 2200 block of Huntington Avenue. When they arrived, the overflow was ongoing.
As a result, the city set up a bypass around the manhole Thursday afternoon to stop the over flow according to Jay Apperson, spokesperson for MDE.
At the time of this writing, the cause remains unknown.
Most of the sewage was getting into a stormdrain that leads into the Jones Falls.
The investigation is ongoing.
