Baltimore, MD - Sept 8, 2025 - On Sunday night, hundreds from the Baltimore community, including rabbinic and community leaders, gathered at Talmudical Academy to pay tribute to Larry Katz, zatzal. Special Guest Speaker Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, Executive Vice President of Agudath Israel of America, spoke of Larry’s impact on the national scene, his dedication to the klal, and the respect and deference leading roshei yeshiva gave to his judgment on communal matters, particularly regarding accreditation of yeshivos. Due to their trust and appreciation for his unwavering honesty, he was called upon to help mediate situations beyond Baltimore’s confines.

R’ Yehuda Lefkovitz, longtime president of TA, spoke of Larry’s leadership in guiding TA through many challenges, transforming it from a small and less-Torah-committed student body into the thriving school that it is today. He talked about Larry’s friendship and his constant accessibility to guide and mentor TA leadership.

R’ Larry Ziffer, CEO of the Charles Crane Family Foundation, spoke of Dean Katz’s influence in shaping the foundation to focus on Torah education while still being a dedicated stalwart of the foundation’s mission to prevent violence. He said Dean Katz was a prince in the field — humble and accessible to all — a true Kiddush Hashem, as well as his personal mentor in klal work.

Chaim Yehuda Kruger spoke warmly of Dean Katz’s impact on his life as a young boy growing up without a father figure in his home. In shul, he could be found sitting next to “Dad,” as he referred to him, going on Sunday bike rides, or sharing his love for ping pong with young Chaim Yehuda.

Dean Katz’s legacy of integrity, leadership, and chesed will continue to inspire and guide the Baltimore community for generations to come.
