Washington, DC – May 22, 2025 – A horrifying shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, claimed the lives of Yaron Lischinsky and Sara Milgram, z'l, H'yd, a young Israeli couple who were both staffers at the Israeli Embassy and were soon to be married. The couple was attending a diplomatic event hosted by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) when they were fatally shot in what officials are calling an act of antisemitic terrorism.
The attacker, identified as Elias Rodriguez, 30, from Chicago, reportedly entered the venue wearing a keffiyeh and shouted “Free Palestine” before opening fire. Eyewitnesses say he initially posed as a bystander, asking security to call police and accepting water from staff before admitting to officers, “I did it, I did it for Gaza. Free Palestine.” He was taken into custody at the scene and is believed to have acted alone.
Ambassador Yechiel Leiter confirmed that Lischinsky had purchased an engagement ring and planned to propose next week in Jerusalem. The two had been planning their wedding.
In a deeply emotional statement, the Israeli Embassy said:
“Yaron and Sara were our friends. They were in the prime of their lives. This evening, a terrorist shot and killed them as they left an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington. The entire embassy staff is heartbroken and devastated by the murder. There are no words to express the depth of our sorrow and horror at this terrible loss. Our hearts are with their families, and the embassy will stand by them during this horrific time.”
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem condemned the shooting as senseless and assured the public that the perpetrator will be brought to justice.
President Donald Trump commented on Truth Social:
“These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW! Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA. Condolences to the families of the victims. So sad that such things as this can happen! God Bless You ALL!”
Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon also denounced the attack, calling it a “depraved act of antisemitic terrorism” and warning that such acts represent a red line.
Eyewitness Sara Marinuzzi told CNN that Rodriguez appeared erratic and manipulated the scene before calmly confessing.
“There were some more shots and then a guy came running into the center, and the security guards offered him water, trying to comfort him. He was kind of having erratic behavior. They figured he witnessed the shooting,” she said.
This tragedy has not only stunned the Jewish and diplomatic communities but also reignited calls for stronger protections against antisemitic violence and extremist rhetoric.
