Pikesville, MD - Jan. 27, 2025:
Dear Community Members,
During the last several weeks, the Pikesville Precinct has experienced an increase of theft of motor vehicles throughout the area.
Remember to lock and remove all valuables from your vehicle. This includes vehicle keys/ key FOBs, house keys, wallets and garage door openers. Keep your residences secured at all times. Lock your windows, doors, and use your residential alarm system if available.
Car thieves are becoming increasingly sophisticated, using advanced technology to bypass traditional security measures. Keyless car theft is a growing concern. By taking simple steps like using a Faraday bag to shield your car key from wireless signals, you can significantly reduce your risk of vehicle theft. To safeguard your vehicle, consider the following tips:
- Faraday Bag: A Faraday bag is a simple yet effective tool to prevent keyless car theft. By placing your car key inside this shielded pouch, you can block the signal, making it impossible for thieves to remotely unlock or start your vehicle.
- Signal Blocking Key Case: Similar to a Faraday bag, a signal blocking key case can shield your car key from unwanted radio interference. These cases are compact and easily portable.
- Secure Key Storage: Keep your car key away from your front door to minimize the risk of signal interception by thieves. Store it in a drawer or on a shelf.
- Disable Keyless Entry (if possible): Some vehicles allow you to temporarily disable the keyless entry system. This can be a helpful measure, especially when parking in high-risk areas. Consult your vehicle's manual for specific instructions.
- Smart Parking: Always park your vehicle in well-lit, secure locations, such as parking garages, gated communities, or areas with security cameras.
- Additional Deterrent: Steering Wheel Lock: While not specifically designed for keyless theft prevention, a steering wheel lock can act as a visual deterrent and make it more difficult for thieves to steal your vehicle.
