Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz will not run for re-election amid the daycare fraud scandal in his home state.

“Donald Trump and his allies – in Washington, in St. Paul, and online – want to make our state a colder, meaner place,” Walz said in a statement, according to The Associated Press.

“They want to poison our people against each other by attacking our neighbors. And, ultimately, they want to take away much of what makes Minnesota the best place in America to raise a family,” the statement continued.

Minnesota political analyst Blois Olson announced on X on Sunday that Walz would make an announcement this week.“BREAKING: Sources: @govtimwalz will make announcement about his political future Mon,” Olson wrote on X. "He's likely to drop out of the 2026 #mngov race.”Olson said that Walz met with Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar over the weekend.

Minnesota has been in the news over the past few weeks after Youtuber Nick Shirley went to daycare centers in Minnesota on a weekday, noting that they were vacant.

Shirley alleged that millions of taxpayer dollars were funding the daycare centers, resulting in the Trump administration taking action.
