Annapolis, MD - Aug. 9, 2025 - The Maryland House Republican Caucus sent a letter to Governor Wes Moore on Friday expressing strong opposition to a $100,000 settlement approved by the Board of Public Works in a lawsuit involving the University of Maryland and Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

In the letter, Republican lawmakers criticized the decision, calling it “a slap in the face to Marylanders” and accusing SJP of operating as “a de facto wing of Hamas.”
The legislators argued that taxpayer dollars should not be used to fund what they describe as a “radical antisemitic organization.”
The Caucus raised concerns about the impact of the payment on Jewish students across Maryland’s university system and warned that it could embolden similar groups to pursue legal action in hopes of taxpayer-funded payouts.
"At a time when universities are being investigated and sanctioned at the federal level, this is not the posture that our flagship university should take," the letter stated.
The $100,000 settlement stems from a lawsuit filed by SJP against the University of Maryland, though specific legal details were not mentioned in the letter.
The Republican lawmakers emphasized that the funds could have been better used for essential services like education or public safety.
Governor Moore has not yet responded publicly to the letter.
