Baltimore, MD -  Feb. 15, 2025  - As alarms are being raised about spiking gas and electric bills across Maryland, a state utility watchdog is warning that future gas delivery rates stand to rise even more than previously expected.

The Maryland Office of People’s Counsel said in a new analysis that Maryland’s three largest gas utilities, including Baltimore Gas & Electric Co., are projected to spend more than $18 billion on gas infrastructure through 2043.

BGE customers alone average monthly winter gas bills could jump 67% in the next 10 years, the report said.

A typical BGE customer who paid on average $240 per month for their winter gas bill from 2022 through last year is expected to pay more than $400 per month by 2035, a 67% jump, if spending remains unchanged and with no declines in the amount of gas used, the report said.

But with just modest declines in customer counts, average winter bills could hit more than $500 per month for gas service alone, the report said.
