Washington, D.C. – Jan. 29, 2025 – A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet, operating American Airlines Flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas, collided midair with a U.S. Army Sikorsky H-60 Blackhawk helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan National Airport (DCA). Three U.S. Army soldiers were on board the chopper with the call sign PAT-25. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. local time and has resulted in the temporary closure of the airport as emergency responders work on a search and rescue operation in the Potomac River.
The FAA and NTSB are leading the investigation, with officials stating that preliminary reports indicate a midair collision just before landing. The DC Fire Department, Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), and federal agencies are actively involved in the response.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation and is closely monitoring the ongoing efforts. "There are many agencies working together to save as many lives as possible. The President's thoughts and prayers are with all those involved," Leavitt said.
Emergency responders, including fireboats, police, and aviation rescue teams, are searching the Potomac River for survivors. DC Police clarified that their helicopter was not involved in the incident, but they are assisting in the multi-agency response.
Kansas Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall have acknowledged that the jet originated from Wichita, Kansas, and expressed their concerns. "We are in contact with authorities working to get answers. We ask you to join us in prayer for every single passenger and their families," Marshall said in a statement.
The FAA has issued an advisory halting all takeoffs and landings at DCA while emergency efforts continue. The airport terminal remains open, but passengers are advised to check with their airlines for further updates.
This is a developing story. More details will be provided as they become available.
