OTTAWA, Canada (TNND) — Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to resign Monday as leader of the country's Liberal Party, according to Canadian outlet Globe and Mail.
Trudeau has led the left-leaning party since 2013 and the nation since 2015. He will reportedly stay on as prime minister until a new leader is selected.
Speculation about the prime minister’s party exit comes as the Liberal Party faces a leadership crisis. Several of Trudeau’s cabinet members resigned in 2024, such as Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Freeland’s scathing resignation letter acknowledged she and Trudeau had been "at odds about the best path forward for Canada."
President-elect Donald Trump recently put additional pressure on Trudeau by threatening to place a 25% tariff on Canadian goods unless the country secured its border with the U.S. The prime minister urged Canadians “not to freak out, not to panic” over Trump’s threat.
Trudeau has also faced calls to resign from other Canadian political leaders amid the chaos.
“Right now Canadians are struggling with the cost of living. I hear it everywhere I go,” New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh said. “People cannot find a home that they can afford, they cannot buy their groceries.”
"We have Trump threatening tariffs of 25% which puts hundreds and thousands of Canadian jobs at risk,” Singh added. “And instead of focusing on these issues, Justin Trudeau and the liberals are focusing on themselves. They’re fighting themselves instead of fighting for Canadians."
Trudeau has paid close attention to American media lately, taking to social media to share his condolences after the death of former President Jimmy Carter and the New Orleans terror attack.
“The relationship between Canada and the United States is unlike any in the world,” Trudeau noted Friday via X. “That comes down to our history, to our trade, and to the many people who have protected and fostered it.”
