Baltimore, MD - Dec. 29, 2024 - With just three days left in the year, Baltimore police are investigating three shootings from Friday, one of which was fatal. A 21-year-old man was killed in West Baltimore just after 2 p.m.
Despite the recent violence, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott highlighted a significant decrease in homicides and non-fatal shootings. "Homicides are down 23 percent from last year, and non-fatal shootings are down 34 percent," Scott said.
According to the latest data from the Baltimore Police Department, there have been 197 homicides, down from 256 at this time last year. Non-fatal shootings have also decreased, with 409 incidents reported, 212 fewer than last year.
Mayor Scott attributed the decline to his comprehensive violence reduction strategy and partnerships with key agencies. "We know that I laid out our initiatives and very comprehensive violence reduction strategy years ago," he said, acknowledging the support of the State’s Attorney and the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates and U.S. Attorney Erek Barron have formed a partnership to tackle crime in the city. "Now I know I’ve talked about ... their toothbrush will be waiting for them," Bates said. Barron added, "We're taking our ... so pack an extra toothbrush."
The collaboration between Bates and Barron led to the indictment of four criminal organizations following a six-month wiretap operation. "This could never have been done, without Erek Barron," Bates said. The operation prevented potential violence similar to the Brooklyn Day mass shooting, where 30 people were shot, two fatally. The wiretap also resulted in the seizure of 65 guns and the prevention of several planned assassinations.
While some legal experts question the impact of the Mayor’s Group Violence Reduction Strategy (GVRS), the partnership between Bates and Barron is seen as a driving force behind the decline in violence. "We will hold you accountable. Get an extra toothbrush," they warned.
