Jerusalem, Israel - Nov. 25, 2024 - On November 9, 2023, lone soldier Sgt. Rose Ida Lubin, Hy"d, was buried in Har Herzl Military Cemetery after being stabbed to death on November 6, while on patrol in Jerusalem's Old City. Thousands of people came to the funeral and shiva. Most did not know Rose or her family who arrived from Atlanta, Georgia, for the funeral. They sat shiva as hundreds passed by each day to hug or cry or mumble words of hamakom.
On Motzaei Shabbat, Chaya Sarah, November 23, 2024, a Sefer Torah in Rose's memory proceeded from Betzalel Street to King George Street, to a small synagogue off Yaffo Road.
Robin Lubin, Rose's mother, pushed Rose's grandfather under the chuppah, smiling as the music blasted through the loudspeaker on the van proceeding a crowd of hundreds. Most people did not know Rose and her family, however, a few distant relatives gathered sharing their connection.
Not everyone was comfortable with the lively music and dancing. However, the shul was festive with a meat buffet, ready as the Torah was greeted traditionally and entered the building.
Lone Soldier organization Chayal el Chayel founded and led by Mordy Botnick was involved as were benefactors from overseas who helped raise the funds for the Torah and sponsored the Hachnasas Sefer Toran in memory of Rose.
