Baltimore County Prepares To Assist Residents In Need Of Shelter During Cold Weather

 2024-2025 freezing weather shelter plan in place through April 15, 2025

Towson, MD - Nov. 15, 2024  - Baltimore County today activated its freezing weather shelter plan in preparation for the impending cold weather season. In place through April 15, the plan allows for the activation of the cold weather shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness when the forecast calls for freezing weather.

Freezing Weather Shelters
During the day, public facilities such as libraries, senior and community centers, shopping malls and places of worship offer respite from harsh weather, and individuals are encouraged to utilize these options as needed. County emergency shelters will be open from 6 p.m. until 9 a.m. on evenings when the temperature is expected to drop below freezing (below 32 degrees).

Those in need of overnight shelter are encouraged to call the County’s resource and referral line at 410-887-TIME (8463) – option 1, to confirm activation and bed availability at the above locations. Residents should arrive no later than 10 p.m. Shelter activation may be extended to include daytime hours when County offices are closed due to severe weather conditions.
 
Cold Weather Reminders
The combination of low temperatures and wind chill constitute a threat, especially to adults, children and individuals with respiratory or other chronic diseases. Those in danger or experiencing severe health issues due to weather should call 911.
 
Be Cautious and Prepared: Tips for Residents

• Prepare and keep handy a 72-hour emergency kit.
• Check on senior residents and those who are chronically ill.
• Remain careful when walking in icy areas – many cold-weather injuries result from falls on ice-covered surfaces.
• Avoid becoming overtired when participating in outdoor activities during cold weather.
• Check in with a medical provider: Individuals with heart disease or high blood pressure should talk to their doctor before exercising or working outside during cold weather; cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart.

Stay Healthy

• Eat well-balanced meals to stay warmer
• Avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages – they cause the body to lose heat more rapidly.
• Drink warm beverages or broth to help maintain body temperature. Those with dietary restrictions should consult their doctor.

Dress for Warmth and Stay Dry
Those outside in cold weather should wear:

• A hat, scarf or knit mask to cover face and mouth
• Sleeves that are snug at the wrist
• Mittens (they are warmer than gloves)
• Water-resistant coat and boots
• Multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing

Keep Pets Indoors

• Pets should not be left outside in freezing weather.

Pet owners should have an emergency plan for their care as most shelters do not allow pets
