Jerusalem, Israel - Nov. 8, 2024  - Dr. Yechiel Leiter has been appointed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel's next ambassador to the United States. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Leiter immigrated to Israel at 18, where he went on to serve in various senior roles in government, including as Chief of Staff to Netanyahu during his tenure as Finance Minister and as Deputy Director General in the Ministry of Education. Leiter holds advanced degrees in law, political science, international relations, and a PhD in political philosophy.

Leiter is widely respected in diplomatic circles and has been involved with prominent right-leaning organizations like the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and the Kohelet Forum. The appointment follows the loss of his son, Major Moshe (Yedidya) Leiter, z'l, H'yd, who fell in combat in Gaza last year. At his son’s funeral, Leiter made a heartfelt appeal to President Biden, also a Scranton native, urging him to support Israel in its ongoing security challenges, especially in the fight against Hamas. His words underscored the shared commitment to defending democratic values.

Netanyahu praised Leiter as a skilled diplomat who deeply understands American culture and politics, and he noted Leiter’s enduring commitment to the values that both the United States and Israel uphold. The Prime Minister shared the Leiter family’s story in a July speech before Congress, emphasizing the strength and resilience of Israel’s defenders, including Moshe, whom Netanyahu described as an exemplary officer and father.

With his deep-rooted connections in both Israel and the United States, Leiter’s diplomatic mission is expected to strengthen U.S.-Israel relations and advocate for the shared Judeo-Christian values he has championed throughout his career. His appointment is scheduled to take effect in January, after he formally renounces his U.S. citizenship to serve in his new role.
