First Human Case of West Nile Virus in Maryland Reported in Baltimore Area

Baltimore, MD - Aug. 26, 2024 - (WBALTV) On August 26, 2024, Maryland health officials reported that an adult from the Baltimore area tested positive for the first human case of West Nile virus in the state this year. The patient has since recovered. The virus, typically transmitted by mosquitoes that have fed on infected birds, affects the nervous system. While most infected individuals show no symptoms, some may experience mild symptoms like fever and body aches. Older adults and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.
