Rising Concerns Over Post-Holiday Surge in Illnesses in Baltimore

Baltimore, MD - Jan. 8, 2024 - Recently, many people seem to be getting sick, raising concerns about a potential post-holiday increase in illnesses, according to WMAR2News. Experts, including Dr. Andy Pekosz from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, are researching the flu and COVID, anticipating a surge in cases. Typically, such surges can last 4-6 weeks, and this one is expected to continue throughout January and February.

Data from the Maryland Dept. of Health shows a notable increase in COVID hospitalizations, with about 200 more people hospitalized on January 2, 2024, compared to December 2, 2023. While hospitalizations haven't spiked yet, experts believe they may follow the rise in cases.

On a positive note, RSV cases are starting to decline, although they remain relatively high. Some hospitals are reinstating mask mandates as a precaution, which experts recommend for limiting virus spread.

Despite the challenges, the good news is that flu and COVID vaccines appear effective against the viruses. High-risk individuals are encouraged to get tested at the first sign of symptoms and stay home if they feel sick.
