Antisemitic and anti-Israel was spray-painted on the largest synagogue of Barcelona's largest synagogue.
“Free Palestine from the river to the sea. Solidarity with the Palestinian people,” was written in Catalan on the facade of the Maimonides Synagogue.
"From the river to the sea" is a genocidal dog whistle calling for the complete destruction of the State of Israel between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea and has its origins with Palestinian Arab terrorist groups which sought the Jewish State's destruction.
Fliers strewn near the synagogue accused Israel of committing a “genocide against the Palestinian people and apartheid." Israel was also called "a murderous country that steals land and destroys innocents’ homes."
The European Jewish Congress condemned the vandalism. "Outrageous! We utterly condemn the antisemitic graffiti on the facade of Barcelona's synagogue: "Free Palestine" and "From the River to the Sea". This graffiti is yet more evidence that anti-Zionism is antisemitism. We stand in solidarity with Barcelona Judia," the organization said.
In February, Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau announced the suspension of all of the city's ties with Israel, citing alleged human rights abuses.
“At the request of more than 100 entities and thousands of Barcelona neighbors, I have just communicated to [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu that we suspend institutional relations with the State of Israel due to the repeated violations of human rights of the Palestinian population and non-compliance with United Nations resolutions," Colau said.
Barcelona’s city council subsequently voted to reject Colau's move to un-twin the city from Tel Aviv and sever ties with Israel. However, the vote was largely symbolic and did not legally affect the mayor's decision.
