Jerusalem, Israel - May 10, 2022 - After a full day of meetings with Israeli government officials including Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, and a meaningful visit to Yad Vashem, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kosovo Donika Gërvalla-Schwarz was hosted at a reception held at the Kosovo Embassy in Jerusalem, Israel.

The reception on Monday evening included Israeli diplomats and people interested in furthering connections between Kosovo and Israel. Kosovo Charge d'affaires Ines Demiri, who has performed actively in the role as the ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo accompanied Gërvalla-Schwarz throughout the day and introduced her to the guests in Jerusalem.

Among those attending was Rabbi Yitzchak Schapira, who for over 10 years has worked to improve Jewish cemeteries worldwide, from disrepair, neglect, and vandalism by founding the European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative.

Before World War ll, more than seven million Jews lived in Central and Eastern Europe. Jews had inhabited the towns and villages for centuries.  As a result of the annihilation of communities in the Shoah, all traces of many of their cemeteries have been lost, and centuries of Jewish settlement in Central and Eastern Europe have been erased.

Rav Schapira has been said to have used resources, connections, bridge-building skills, determination, and values that he learned from his late father, Rabbi Avraham Yosef (Munia) Schapira z"l.

A Knesset Member from the Agudat Israel party, first elected in 1981, he became chairman of the governing coalition. "Reb Munia" as he was fondly called, was re-elected in 1984, after which he chaired the Finance Committee. He also served as chairman of the Bank of Israel's steering committee, where he had a strong influence on Israel's financial situation.

In 1959, before being urged into politics by the Gerrer Rebbe, he bought a carpet factory, Carmel Carpets. At its peak, the business employed 1,600 employees and is said to have had an annual turnover of $500 million.

Pinchas, the oldest of four sons said of his father, "We’re descended from both Rav Pinchas of Koritz and Rav Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev. Rav Pinchas was known for his sharp mind and the Berdichever for his compassionate and loving heart, and our father got both."

Reb Yitzchak Schapira is based in London and Zurich but is known to make frequent trips to Israel. With a little research BJL learned in 2014, Reb Yitzchak was a recipient of one of Queen Elizabeth’s highest honors, the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for “strengthening the ties between the UK and the chareidi community.”

At the Kosovo reception, the Deputy Minister of Kosovo attentively listened as Schapira explained his chesed work to restore dignity to Jewish burial sites.
