In honor of Parshas Bshalach which contains the Song of Az Yashir, I decided to write this week’s Dvar Torah in a lyric style. Enjoy the timeless message of Nachshon, the great man who jumped into the sea, and caused the sea to split before the eyes of the Jewish people:

Standing by the seashore

Nowhere to go.

Enemies surround me,

I feel so alone.

But I know

There’s a G-d in Heaven,

Who wants me to know,

“My dear son, have faith in Me.”

The people all around me

Standing so still;

I look into my soul,

Trying to find the will.

And I know

There’s a G-d in Heaven,

I want Him to know,

“My dear G-d, I trust in You.”

Nachshon ben Aminadav

When no one else will jump

I’ll be the one.

Bmakom Sh’ein Ish, I’ll be the man.

The Sea split before me

A site to behold.

Enemies have fallen,

We’re no longer sold.

And I know

There’s a G-d in Heaven,

Who wants me to know

“Me dear son, I’m proud of you.”

As generations pass,

A message is told.

One man’s decision,

Of bravery so bold.

And we know

There’s a G-d in Heaven.

We want Him to know,

“Zeh Keli V’anvehu!”

Nachshon, son of Aminadav, decided to literally “take the plunge” and jump into the sea. His Emunah in Hashem and his valiant effort on behalf of the Jewish people stood the test of time, and we reflect upon his very actions during our moments of confusion and difficulty, and we learn the importance of standing up and standing tall to do what is right, even though it might be difficult.

We often talk about the importance of being “like Nachshon” and jumping in and dedicating ourselves to do that which is important. But, if you think about it, who taught Nachshon to be “like Nachshon”?

Maybe, just maybe, that’s the point. No one taught him. Some things in life are unteachable. Nachshon looked deep within and discovered a part of his essence, a part of his calling and mission. That part of him was yearning to come forth and glorify the Name of G-d, and he did it.

It’s a message for us. Greatness is not something that is taught, per se. It is something that is earned by tapping into one’s essence and bringing out the best of what he or she has to offer on this world.
