House Republicans plan to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee as soon as Wednesday, reports the Washington Post. After GOP leaders secured enough support for the resolution condemning her past antisemitic remarks, the House Rules Committee quickly approved the rule for debate on the House floor. However, final approval remains uncertain as the House has yet to formally establish the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee for this term. Republicans have worked for weeks to ensure there are enough votes for the resolution to pass. The resolution would condemn Omar for suggesting Israel's allies in US politics were motivated by money instead of principles in a 2019 tweet that read "It's all about the Benjamins baby." The resolution also disapproves of her repeated critiques of Israel and her comparison of the US to terrorist groups. Omar, a refugee from Somalia, is one of the first Muslim women in the House of Representatives and faces death threats. The Democrats plan to stand by her to block any effort to remove her from committees. The minority leader, whip and caucus chairman met to discuss when to approve Democratic lawmakers for the Foreign Affairs Committee, knowing a vote to expel Omar would follow.
