The legislation will prevent landlords from being able to evict their tenants for 60 days

The Knesset (Israel Parliament) committee for legislative affairs is scheduled to discuss on Sunday a bill that will temporarily suspend rent payments for 60 days due to the economic crisis stemming from the COVID-19 health crisis, according to The Jerusalem Post.

The bill, submitted by Ofer Cassif (Unified Arab List), will instruct the Finance Ministry to make payments to landlords in lieu of renters. 

In addition, the legislation will prevent landlords from being able to evict their tenants during this "special emergency period" for two months. 

The announcement comes as the number of coronavirus cases reached a new record this week, with more than 1,400 new cases being confirmed on Thursday evening.

Health Minister Yuli Edelstein later warned that the country may be forced into a second nation-wide lockdown if daily cases reach more than 2,000. Read more at i24
