We are reminded in many places that the Torah does not necessarily record events in precise chronological order.  Sometimes there are specific lessons to be learned from the juxtapositions and other times the reason is more elusive.  Virtually all commentaries agree that the events of the Eigel Hazahav are not in correct chronological order.  Most agree that this event occurred close to the giving of the Aseres Hadibros in Parshas Yisro.  Many varying explanations are offered for why the Torah records Parshiyos Mishpatim, Teruma and Tetzaveh before returning to this watershed moment. It is interesting to note that the center pieces of these Parshiyos is the building of the Mishakan.  Rashi points out (Pikudei 38:21) that the building of th...

The first full lunar eclipse since 2022 will shine overnight in Maryland skies.  In a total lunar eclipse, the moon moves into the inner part of Earth’s shadow, or umbra, bathing the moon in darkness. According to NASA, some of the sunlight passing through our planet’s atmosphere reaches the moon’s surface, giving it the trademark color. A partial eclipse occurs when only part of Earth’s shadow covers the moon. The Penumbral phase starts at 11:57 p.m. Eastern. All told, the celestial event goes until dawn. The overnight weather forecast for the Baltimore area calls for mostly cloudy skies with a low around 44 degrees. During the eclipse, the moon will look dark red or orange for about 65 minutes, but the event will last just over six hours. ...
October 17, 2024, seemed like just another day at the Pentagon until a sudden request came from then-defense minister Yoav Gallant to speak to his US counterpart at the time, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. “It was morning in Washington, and we received a request for an urgent phone call, so we worked quickly to make the arrangements,” recalls Daniel (Dan) Shapiro, then-deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East, in an interview with The Jerusalem Post. This is the first time Shapiro, or any other senior US official, has been willing to discuss in detail the behind-the-scenes events in Washington on the day Hezbollah’s pagers exploded. “Minister Gallant informed Secretary Austin that Israel had a special capability, which h...
The Rama mentions that 'people are accustomed to wearing ืคืจืฆื•ืคื™ื — faces, i.e. masks, on Purim'. (ืื•"ื— ืชืจืฆ"ื• ื—) It always struck me that in the portion of Ki Sisa, which inevitably follows Purim except in a leap year, there appears the sole reference in all of Torah to someone donning specifically a 'face mask'. And it came to pass when Moshe descended from Mount Sinai, and the two tablets of the testimony were in Moshe's hand when he descended from the mountain and Moses did not know that the skin of his face had become radiant while He had spoken with him. Aharon and all the children of Israel saw Moshe and behold! the skin of his face had become radiant, ื•ื™ื™ืจืื• — and they feared, ืžื’ืฉืช — to come near him. But Moses cal...

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration on Thursday to reinstate probationary workers who were let go in recent mass firings from six different agencies, including the Department of Defense.  The administration is expected to file an appeal against the ruling by U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco.  The judge’s order came during a federal court hearing over a lawsuit from labor unions and other groups challenging the mass termination being directed by the Office of Personnel Management.  Those plaintiffs said it violates Administrative Procedure Act requirements and congressional laws that deal with agency hiring and firing practices. The judge earlier ruled OPM lacked the power to fire workers, including probationary empl...
Several dozen protesters supporting Mahmoud Khalil occupied the lobby area of Trump Tower on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue on Thursday, calling for the release of the anti-Israel activist who was detained over the weekend.  The protesters, many dressed in red, held signs reading "Free Mahmoud, Free Palestine" and "Fight Nazis Not Students." The NYPD could be seen hauling out multiple demonstrators in zip ties. ICE agents arrested Khalil at his university-owned apartment on the city’s Upper West Side on Saturday. Agents told him they were revoking his green card and student visa, according to Khalil's attorneys.  The Jewish Voice for Peace, said it helped organize the protest. The group’s X account says its aim is to organize Jews "toward Palestinian liberatio...
Baltimore, MD - March 13, 2025 - What an incredible month for the talmidim, rebbeim, and parents of Yeshivas Mekor Chaim (YMC)! Earlier this month, YMC participated in its first-ever Crowdsource fundraising campaign. With a goal of $120,000, the boys created individual and grade-level teams to help their school raise funds in its first-ever, exhilarating campaign. The level of commitment was inspiring. After a two day-call center and week-long campaign effort, the yeshiva reached and exceeded its goal with the help of numerous community contributions and the generosity of our campaign matchers. Rewarded with pizza lunches and YMC branded ski beanies, the boys enjoyed a celebratory ski trip to Liberty Mountain Resort as a recognition of their efforts. As always, YMC strives to infuse Torah...
