Baltimore, MD - Jan. 17, 2026 - The Baltimore City Council is proposing forming a best-in-class community safe response system.  It would include dispatching trained civilians instead of police for non-violent, non-criminal situations. Council President Zeke Cohen explained why it's needed. "Many of the issues that people call 911 about are mental or behavioral health issues, and we need to make sure we deploy the right responders to address that kind of issue," he said, "Cops are not clinicians." This comes after three Baltimoreans experiencing mental health crises were killed by police in August. But the council isn't starting from scratch. Following the DOJ's consent decree in 2017, the Behavioral Health System Baltimore was created to respond to calls like the...
What They Don’t Tell You After “Your Baby Has Spina Bifida” Keep Climbing: A Story of Turning Struggle into StrengthIn the waiting area of the Alyn Hospital clinic, the air was cool and overly clean, laced with the sharp sting of antiseptic. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead. A child’s braces clicked with each uneven step. His mother sat just beyond reach, spine rigid, watching as if every step led to a cliff’s edge. Her eyes traced the uneven sway of her son’s gait as the therapist whispered encouragement. It was not the child’s effort that pained her, it was her own heart, straining under all she couldn’t fix. Beside her, another woman held a bottle and a blanket, her daughter lying on the mat in front of her. The two women glanced at e...
Baltimore, MD – Jan. 16, 2026 - We’re watching two possible winter weather systems that could affect the Baltimore area over the next several days. The first chance for snow is early Shabbos morning. A cold front moving through the region may bring a brief period of snow, mainly during the morning hours. The snow is expected to be light and short-lived, lasting only a couple of hours. Most of Baltimore and nearby areas should see little more than a coating to about a half-inch of snow. Areas northeast of Baltimore, closer to Bel Air, could see slightly higher amounts — up to around an inch, with a few isolated spots near two inches. The second chance comes later in the weekend, but it’s much less certain. A coastal storm may develop off the North Carolina coast ...
New York, NY - Jan. 16, 2026  - Agudath Israel of America commends the Trump administration for easing restrictions on religious workers through a newly issued Interim Final Rule published today in the Federal Register. The rule removes longstanding limitations on religious worker visas (R-1), marking an important step in supporting faith-based institutions and the communities that rely on them.  Under prior regulations, non-citizens in the US serving in religious capacities on R-1 visas were required to leave the United States for a minimum of one year once their visa expired at the end of its five-year term before they could apply for and obtain a new R-1 visa. This requirement imposed significant hardships on religious workers as many of them serve in leadership positions suc...

Behold, the Children of Israel have not listened to me, so how will Pharoah listen to me? And I have sealed lips! (ืฉืžื•ืช ื• ื™ื‘) Although this expression of Moshe seems like a question, with Moshe wondering how Pharaoh could possibly accept his words if the people wouldn't listen to him, especially with the additional deficit of his speech impediment — the Sefas Emes interprets it as a statement. Moshe is expressing the reality that a leader is only as empowered as those he seeks to lead. If the people are incapable of hearing his message, Moshe interjects, then his lips are sealed. If only the nation would be receptive, would he be bestowed the power of speech to impact Pharoah as well. So how did he finally succeed in getting them to listen? After Moshe poses this dile...

President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that he could invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 and allow the U.S. military to be used for law enforcement purposes amid tension in Minnesota. "If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don't obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the patriots of ICE, who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the Insurrection Act," Trump wrote Thursday on Truth Social. The post comes one day after a federal officer shot a person in the leg after allegedly being attacked with a shovel. The shooting was about five miles from the location where an immigration agent shot Renee Good in the head on Jan. 7 as she attempted to drive away. The presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, coupled wi...
With a jam packed Parsha, sometimes it’s easy to overlook some seemingly strange narrative. Take this one exchange between Moshe and Pahroh. Mitzrayim is under siege form the frogs and Pahroh beseeches Moshe, “Prey for me that the frogs should stop”. Moshe responds “When should they stop? (VaEira, 8: 5) Really? Is there any answer other than “NOW!! Right NOW”!? Apparently so, – Pahroh in fact responds, “tomorrow”. Make these insufferable frogs go away tomorrow (8:6). What on earth can that be about. Why wouldn’t Pharoh want the frogs to go away immediately? This perplexing question is followed up with the Macca of Kinim where Pharohs magicians concede that this is “the finger of G-d” as they could not work magic on any...
