The Churban “All the Roman commanders who saw the internal conflict among the Jews viewed it as a gift from heaven and urged an immediate attack. But Vespasian wisely counseled patience: ‘If we wait, we will find our enemy fewer in number, after they have worn themselves out through their internal struggle. It is better to leave the Jews to destroy one another.’”[1] The Beit HaMikdash was destroyed because we saw each other as enemies. Our infighting weakened us and made us vulnerable to attack by our actual enemies, who waited patiently for us to exhaust each other. Indeed, the Churban was a natural result of baseless hatred, not just an external punishment. This historical lesson should serve as a stark reminder of the dire consequences of disunity. Oct...

Over Shabbat, the Russian army launched hundreds of missiles and drones at populated cities across Ukraine. In Dnipro — often referred to as “the capital of Ukrainian Jewry” — more than 100 missiles and suicide drones were fired. One missile struck the upper floor of a luxury residential building in the city center, home to one of the Chabad emissary families, Rabbi Moshe and Shoshi Weber. The explosion killed two people and injured dozens more. The Webers’ apartment was partially destroyed, but miraculously, the family escaped unharmed. Rabbi Weber directs “Kolel Torah” in Ukraine — a network of organized Torah-learning centers that operate worldwide, particularly in Europe and the former Soviet Union, with over 5,000 active participants....
The "Handala" ship, which left Italy with pro-Palestinian activists on board, is approaching Gaza, and soldiers from the IDF's elite Shayetet 13 unit have taken control of it. The flotilla left the city of Syracuse in Italy towards the Gaza Strip about two weeks ago with the declared goal of "breaking the siege on Gaza." In recent hours, an alarm was sounded on the ship, with the participant donning life vests and claiming they were preparing for a takeover. The IDF said: "The IDF enforces the maritime security blockade on the Gaza Strip and is prepared for a variety of scenarios, which will be carried out according to the directives of the political echelon." One of the flotilla participants, a pro-Palestinian Jew from New York by the name of Jacob Berger, posted a video on Insta...

The Trump administration approved Israel's strike on Iran on June 13 but made it clear that the United States would only join the campaign if the attack was successful, Washington Post commentator David Ignatius reported. Israeli officials cited in the report claimed that, alongside its nuclear bomb project, Iran was also trying to develop an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) bomb, which is detonated at a high altitude and generates a powerful electromagnetic pulse capable of crippling electrical infrastructure in Israel. According to the report, the Iranian nuclear program was damaged in the attack to the extent that it set it back at least one year, but not several years as Israeli initially claimed. Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Iran was...

Parshas Mattos provides us with some valuable insights into the concepts of responsibility, Hakaras Hatov and the merits of being part of a Tzibbur.  After defeating Midyan in war pursuant to Hashem’s direction, there is some question as to how to share and divide the considerable spoils.  First, we are given the commandment of Hechsher Keilim – the process of “kashering” untensils which formerly belonged to a goy, either through fire or immersion.  (Mattos 31:22) Next comes Hashem’s directive of how to divide the spoils.  Hashem instructs Moshe to tally up all that has been captured and divide it in half. (31:27) An interesting start for sure.  By whom, are the spoils to be used and enjoyed?  Halves.  What should be done wi...
