Annapolis, MD - July 10, 2025 - Dozens of advocates gathered in a webinar Wednesday to try to determine the impact of the possible loss of $125 million in federal aid to Maryland schools this year, part of $6.8 billion in education funding frozen just last week by the Trump administration. They know this much: The news is not good. “It’s really difficult times,” said Mary Gable, assistant state superintendent for student support and federal programs with the Maryland Department of Education, toward the end of Wednesday’s hourlong webinar. “We are concerned about finances. We are concerned … at the state level, at the local education level and at the community-based organization level.” The U.S. Education Department informed school systems on Ju...

As part of the negotiations for the hostage deal, Israel has agreed in principle that Qatar and additional countries will begin channeling resources and money to rehabilitate the Gaza Strip during the emerging ceasefire. According to Ynet, Hamas is demanding the transfer of funds as part of the assurances that the intent to end the fighting is serious. The organization sees this as a significant message to the Palestinian public in Gaza, aiming to convey that the war is nearing its end. Israel clarified that it will not agree for Qatar to hold exclusive control over the rehabilitation funds, but will request that additional countries participate in the effort. This is also approved by Hamas, which seeks to ensure broad regional involvement in the rehabilitation process. The issue w...
Baltimore, MD - July, 2025  -  Speed cameras on the I-83 Jones Falls Expressway have issued more than $18.5 million in fines in the past three years, but about 80% of the revenue has gone to the camera vendor, Verra Mobility — not the city, according to the Baltimore City Department of Finance. These contracts typically allocate between 19% and 48% of ticket revenues back to the contractor in other Maryland counties, according to multiple outlets around the state. But advocates for the program, including Baltimore City Council Vice President Sharon Green Middleton, say the costs to the city’s budget are acceptable, given the improvement to public safety. “The I-83 cameras were installed to reduce speeding and improve safety along a major corridor, not to gener...

Measles cases in the U.S. have hit a three-decade high, reaching the highest yearly total since 1992 in less than seven months, according to data released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  At least 1,288 measles cases have been reported across the U.S. just over halfway through the year, surpassing the 1,274 cases reported in 2019, when outbreaks in New York pushed the national case count to its highest level in decades at the time. More than 90% of those infected with measles so far this year were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccine status, according to the CDC. Two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR, vaccine are 97% effective at preventing measles. The climbing case count is fueled largely by an outbreak that began in West T...
