A House subcommittee convened on Capitol Hill Wednesday to address the alarming rise in antisemitic attacks across the United States and their implications for national security.
Both Democrats and Republicans expressed concern over the nearly 10,000 reported antisemitic incidents in 2024, the highest number since the Anti-Defamation League started keeping score 46 years ago.
The meeting followed a recent series of violent, targeted, and even deadly attacks. In April, an arsonist set Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's home on fire during Passover. On June 1, a man in Boulder, Colorado, threw Molotov cocktails at a Jewish group raising awareness for the hostages still in Gaza.
Weeks before that attack, a gunman shot and killed two young Israeli emba...
Baltimore, MD - June 11, 2025 - Raw human waste likely from a Southeast Baltimore neighborhood is leaking into the Inner Harbor, according to a complaint reviewed by The Baltimore Sun, and experts say it’s not an uncommon problem.
An initial inspection by the Maryland Department of the Environment on April 10 found a sewage pipe in Brewers Hill was discharging waste into the harbor. The inspection was triggered by a complaint in the 3700 block of Toone Street.
According to the MDE report, a walkthrough revealed that the issue had apparently been ongoing for several months. The department did not disclose how much sewage entered the harbor and the investigation is ongoing.
“Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that we’ve seen something like this,&r...

The U.S. economy grew at a faster pace than expected at the beginning of 2024 as consumers continued to open their wallets despite ongoing inflation and high interest rates.
Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of goods and services produced across the economy, grew by 2.8% on an annualized basis in the three-month period from April through June, the Commerce Department said in its first reading of the data on Thursday.
That is much higher than the 2% increase forecast by LSEG economists and the 1.4% pace seen during the first quarter.
"The U.S. economy is much stronger than people realize and to the extent that markets were worried about a growth slowdown, they should breathe a sigh of relief after this morning’s GDP number," said Chris Zac...

Baltimore, MD - June 11, 2025 - Baltimore County teachers are continuing to call on the school system to honor their contract agreement.
Teachers are demanding the district follow through with already approved pay raises; county leadership said they don’t have the funds.
People rallied outside the final Board of Education meeting of the school year on Tuesday. For months, educators have been demonstrating and walking out of the classroom outside of working hours.
Cindy Sexton, President of the Teachers Association of Baltimore County, said they signed a first-of-its-kind three-year agreement a year ago. Now, in the beginning of year two, the district said it cannot honor raises because it lacks the funds.
“Their offer was to fully fund th...
"America’s Jewish community is under attack, and we need to take decisive action to save lives and mitigate the escalating threats," intelligence expert Kerry Sleeper testified to the US House Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence on Wednesday.
"The threat of targeted violence being faced by the Jewish-Israeli community is complex and continues to evolve; this threat will likely persist for at least the next decade," he said.
Sleeper, who is the Deputy Director of Intelligence at Secure Community Network (SCN), urged the subcommittee to develop a task force to protect the Jewish community from threats in light of the recent attacks on Jews in the US and the threats to national security. He also thanked the subcommittee for "recognizing the urgency of this...
US President Donald Trump expressed growing doubt that Iran will agree to halt its nuclear ambitions under a revised US deal, saying he is “less confident now” than before, the New York Post reported Wednesday.
In an interview on Miranda Devine’s new podcast Pod Force One, Trump said Iran appears to be “delaying,” adding, “they’re not going to have a nuclear weapon,” with or without a deal.
“I don’t know,” Trump told Devine, when asked if a deal can be reached. “I don’t know. I did think so, and I’m getting more and more — less confident about it.”
From his standpoint, a deal is important because “it would be nicer to do it without warfare, without people dying,” but Teh...

The U.S. and China have reached a "framework" to implement a trade deal struck between the two sides last month in Geneva, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced.
Trump then posted on Truth Social Wednesday that "our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me."
The development comes after two days of meetings between negotiators in London and a phone call last week between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The U.S. and China announced a 90-day détente that involved reduced tariffs in May, but both sides had accused each other of running afoul of the deal.
"We have reached a framework to implement the Geneva consensus," Lutnick said

Baltimore, MD – June 11, 2025 – A historic former shul near Druid Hill Park was defaced with the words “Free Pal” scrawled in black tar across the sidewalk and two exterior walls. The graffiti is believed to be a politically motivated reference to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Surveillance footage shows a suspect exiting a vehicle, defacing the building, and fleeing the scene. The building, once home to an Orthodox congregation and now a renovated community space, is used for Jewish events and meetings. Administrators have spent the past two days working to remove the vandalism.
"This is racist, and we're tired. Something’s gotta change," said local resident Shantel Forte. Another neighbor added, “It just lets you know we’re not doing we...
The U.S. Department of Justice announced the extradition of Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, also known as “Shahzeb Jadoon,” from Canada to the United States to face terrorism-related charges. A Pakistani national, Khan allegedly conspired to carry out a large-scale terror attack in New York City, specifically targeting Jewish communities. Authorities say the plot was in support of the Islamic State (ISIS). The extradition follows months of international cooperation, and officials say it underscores the ongoing threat posed by global extremist networks and the U.S. commitment to prosecuting such threats vigorously.
Progress has been made in the ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas, according to an Israeli official speaking to i24NEWS on Tuesday, following Monday night's cabinet meeting convened by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"There is a chance of progress," he said. "There are changes and there are discussions." Qatar is awaiting an updated response from Hamas to the plan submitted by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, which mediators believe could produce some sort of breakthrough, the source said.
Hamas previously sent revisions to Witkoff's plan, an act slammed by both Israel and US officials, which stipulated a 60-day ceasefire and the release of 10 hostages. The terror group seeks American guarantees for a long-term ceasefire, although it appears pressu...
U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver was indicted Tuesday on federal charges alleging she impeded and interfered with immigration officers outside a New Jersey detention center while Newark’s mayor was being arrested after he tried to join a congressional oversight visit at the facility.
Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba announced the grand jury indictment in a post on X.
“While people are free to express their views for or against particular policies, they must not do so in a manner that endangers law enforcement and the communities those officers serve,” Habba said.
McIver, a Democrat, had been charged in a complaint by Habba last month with two assault charges stemming from the May 9 visit to Newark’s Delaney Hall — a 1,000-bed, privately ow...
Several lawmakers and major financial industry leaders shared support for a provision in the Republican-backed “big, beautiful bill” which would award newborns an investment account at birth.
The provision would allow all newborn American babies to receive a one-time “Trump Account” investment of $1,000 from the federal government. A child’s guardian could then contribute up to $5,000 yearly to the account, allowing the money to compound throughout the child’s life.
Several major finance leaders cheered the provision as a major win for future generations of Americans.
“This initiative gets at the core of binding those future generations to the benefits and the potential of America’s great companies and markets,” Goldman Sa...
FBI director Kash Patel praised his agents as well as those from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for taking down a major drug operation in Atlanta, resulting in the removal of 33 firearms and over 252 kilograms of drugs valued at over $9 million, from the streets.
The FBI, alongside the DEA and state and local authorities executed three search warrants last Thursday, resulting in the arrest of 47-year-old Bartholomew Keeton Harralson.
A federal grand jury returned an indictment charging Harralson with three drug trafficking and weapon possession crimes related to the drug trafficking operation.
U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg said Harralson is charged with possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a dr...
During last week’s budget hearing before members of Baltimore City Council, City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates reported in 2024 his office charged 2,891 felony cases, and closed 3,115 felony cases.
Bates further broke down his data, telling council members the increased incarceration of defendants convicted of gun crimes has contributed to the drop in homicides and shootings.
“The data and research says about 5-6,000 violent offenders running around with guns are doing the murders and the shootings. To date we’ve figured we’ve put almost 2500 of those individuals in prison. It's not something we’re proud of to just put people in jail. But these are the individuals running around shooting and killing individuals. We’ve targeted the right people...
