A pot of unclaimed refunds for tax year 2021 totaling over $21 million awaits thousands of Maryland residents, according to an announcement Tuesday from the Internal Revenue Service.
The IRS estimates that $21,766,300 in refunds remain unclaimed by 22,900 Maryland taxpayers who have not filed their Form 1040 federal income tax return for the 2021 tax year.
The IRS estimates the median refund amount for these residents is $837, though the final amount will vary. According to the federal agency, the estimate does not include the Recovery Rebate Credit or other applicable credits.
Under federal law, taxpayers usually have three years to file and claim their tax refunds. If they don’t file within that period, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday night said he would propose to the cabinet to fire Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar around 18 months before his term expires.
Netanyahu moves as Bar is probing several top aides of Netanyahu who are involved in "Qatargate," a saga in which they allegedly were paid by Qatar at the same time as handling sensitive hostage negotiations policy for the prime minister also connected to Qatar.
Normally, the police investigate alleged crimes, but given the national security dimensions, the Shin Bet has taken the lead.
It was unclear if Netanyahu will be able to fire Bar given that either Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara or the High Court of Justice could rule that he has a conflict of interest in seeking to fire a law enforc...

Military spokesperson Yahya Saree said that the US-led attacks against the Houthis on Saturday comprised of more than 47 airstrikes on seven governorates, with the death toll expected to rise.
"The Yemeni Armed Forces will not hesitate to target all American warships in the Red Sea and in the Arabian Sea in retaliation to the aggression against our country," Saree said, vowing the Houthis "will continue to impose a naval blockade on the Israeli enemy and ban its ships in the declared zone of โโoperations until aid and basic needs are delivered to the Gaza Strip."
Israel demanded that Hamas return 11 live hostages, including American hostage Edan Alexander, in exchange for a continuation of the Gaza ceasefire, The Prime Minister's Office announced late Saturday night.
An unidentified source told Qatari-owned news outlet Al Jazeera that the annex that Hamas submitted in response would amend the January 17 ceasefire and would not begin the second phase of negotiations.
The annex that Hamas submitted reportedly included a number of demands, including a complete Israeli withdrawal from Philadelphi; continued rehabilitation efforts for Gazan infrastructure in areas including communications, electricity, water, sanitation, and roads; more humanitarian aid to the enclave, including the continued operation of UN agencies; and a pause on all military ...
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Sunday that the United States would conduct "unrelenting" strikes against the Houthis in Yemen until the militant group ceases their military actions targeting US assets and global shipping.
Speaking on Fox News on Sunday, hours after the Trump administration launched strikes against the Iran-backed Yemeni terror group, Hegseth said the campaign was a response to the scores of attacks the Houthis have launched on ships since November 2023 and served as a warning to Iran to stop backing the group.
"This will continue until you say 'We're done shooting at ships. We're done shooting at assets,'" Hegseth said, adding that the US had no interest in the Yemeni Civil War.
“We don’t want a long, lim...

President Donald Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 Saturday to target the designated foreign terrorist organization Tren de Aragua (TdA) just hours after a federal judge in Washington, D.C., ruled the law could not be used to deport five Venezuelans.
The wartime law, which allows deportation of natives and citizens of an enemy nation without a hearing, has been invoked three times, during the War of 1812, World War I and World War II.
All Venezuelan citizens 14 years or older who are members of TdA, are within the U.S. and are not naturalized or lawful permanent residents of the U.S. may be apprehended, restrained, secured and removed as "alien enemies," according to a proclamation.
Hours before the act was signed, a lawsuit was filed by the Amer...
