Arlington, VA - Feb. 4, 2025 - The remains of all 67 victims of last week's midair collision of an American Airlines flight and an Army helicopter near Washington, D.C., have been recovered, authorities said Tuesday. The chief medical examiner is still trying to positively identify one set of remains, officials said in a news release. The news came Tuesday as crews worked to try to recover the cockpit and other parts of the jetliner from the Potomac River. Officials said their work might depend upon the wind and tidal conditions in the river, where the aircraft crashed last Wednesday night after colliding as the plane was about to land at nearby Ronald Reagan National Airport. All 67 people on board the two aircraft were killed. By midday, crews were working to raise another large ...
US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will reimpose 'maximum pressure' on Iran, aimed at preventing it from obtaining nuclear weapons and reducing its regional influence.Trump’s declaration includes additional economic sanctions and increased diplomatic pressure on Tehran. The move follows reports of an acceleration of Iran's nuclear program and increased military activity in the Middle East."I hope to succeed and reach an agreement with Iran – I would be happy to talk to the leadership there, which is too close to possessing nuclear weapons, and that is an intolerable situation," Trump said.He added, "If Iran tries to eliminate me in response, it will be annihilated."Trump also signed orders to stop funding for UNRWA and for the US to leave the ...

Parashat B’Shalach: Complaining During the Miracle One of the most incredible texts I have ever encountered explores a verse from this parashah, describing the Splitting of the Red Sea. Amid this extraordinary, miraculous event, the Midrash reveals a conversation between two Jews, Reuven and Shimon. As they traversed the seabed, they remarked, "In Egypt, we were immersed in mortar, and here we are still surrounded by mortar. In Egypt we had the mortar that accompanied the bricks and here at the Red Sea we have the mud caused by the splitting waters." Reuben questioned the difference between their past bondage and their current situation. Amidst the miracle, all he could perceive was mud and dirt; to him, mortar was mortar, this time, in a new place. His perspective was clouded, pre...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 4, 2025  - A weather system heading for the mid-Atlantic will bring cold and a freezing rain, sleet and a bit of snow to Maryland by mid-week that could cause school delays Thursday morning, forecasters said. "The next weather maker looms for Wednesday evening into the night which is favoring a wintry mix (freezing rain, sleet, and snow)," the National Weather Service said. "A cold front moves through (Tuesday) morning, which will bring an increase in northwest winds. Heading into Wednesday through Thursday morning, a wintry mix is likely to impact the area, particularly on Wednesday night. Snow, freezing rain, and sleet are likely before 1 a.m. Wednesday night, then freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m., then rain after 4 a.m....
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 4, 2025 - A first-of-its-kind study testing the blood of Maryland residents for toxic forever chemicals found every participant had it in their blood — with nearly all of them at risk for health problems due to their levels of PFAS contamination. Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland Pesticide Education Network collaborated for the study, which was obtained by 11 News Investigates before its publishing date, testing 41 volunteers from across the state during the fall. Dr. Ana Rule, assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, told 11 News Investigates that even with the study's small sample size, it's clear "that most people in Maryland have this in their blood." The study's average result was 10.4. The ...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 4, 2025 - Maryland, like many other states, is working to establish a new transportation funding source as revenues from the fuel tax continue to decline. The fuel tax is the largest source of revenue to fund state transportation projects, but over time, it's been impacted by improved fuel economy, increased ownership in electric and hybrid vehicles, and changes in driver behavior. To get in front of this budget shortfall, Maryland turned to the Eastern Transportation Coalition to learn more about an alternative. It’s called a mileage-based user fee (MBUF). “So, we did a four-month demonstration pilot in Maryland, and Maryland is one of eight states right now along the East Coast that's trying to explore what would happen if we replace the fuel ...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 4, 2025- Tuesday of Parshas Beshalach, is a special day. Seforim tell us that it is extremely prudent to utilize this day to pray for parnassah, livelihood, for the next 12 months. It is a widespread and accepted custom to recite “Parshas Hamonn,” the portion in the Torah that describes the way Hashem provided monn (i.e., parnassah from heaven) for the Yidden in the Midbar. This can be found in Sefer Shemos, Perek 16: 4-36. It is customary to read the pesukim twice and the Targum once, and also to recite a short tefillah for sustenance beforehand.  (Click here for the parsha, including the Targum Onkelos.) Reciting this parsha reminds us that just as Hashem sustained the Jews then, so too, He – and He alone – provides for each and every o...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 3, 2025 - I’ve heard from many of you about the significant increase in your BGE bills, and I understand how challenging this is for everyone. Unfortunately, this rise is impacting many of us. I’m now serving on a committee that oversees energy legislation, and I’m working closely with my colleagues to address this issue. While it’s not an overnight fix, our office has been in direct communication with BGE to discuss concerns with the rising bills we have seen this winter. BGE is taking several steps to help customers manage their bills and maintain service during the winter months:- Waiving late payment fees for January and February 2025.- Suspending disconnections for nonpayment in February 2025. - Streamlining the process to get any customers...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 3, 2025 - The city of Baltimore filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration late Monday, joining a group of organizations challenging a sweeping executive order that rescinded federal funding for diversity, equity and inclusion programs. The lawsuit claims that the city has been left with a “quandary”: It relies on hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants, many of which could be at risk under the executive order.“The uncertainty of federal funding leaves the city wondering whether it needs to start reallocating resources—and likely reduce support for other programs—just to sustain its critical municipal functions," the complaint reads.Read more at The Baltimore Banner
